Reports from Domain state that Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney have recorded the highest annual growth rates, with median weekly rents, increasing by 6.4 per cent, 5.0 per cent and 4.8 per cent respectively in the May quarter, compared to the same time last year.
Adelaide and Hobart recorded solid annual rent increases, both up by 2.9 per cent over the year.
Autumn house rents remain steady in Brisbane but are down significantly in Darwin by 9.3 per cent and 10 per cent in Perth.
Hobart, Melbourne, Canberra & Sydney are the top performers in Unit rentals in Autumn with annual rises of 10.7 per cent, 5.3 per cent, 5.0 per cent and 3.8 per cent respectively.
Unit rents in Adelaide were steady over the past year, Brisbane is down by 1.3 per cent, Darwin down by 6.8 per cent and Perth falling by 11.8 per cent over the past year.
Sydney remains the most expensive capital city with median weekly rents at $550 and unit rents at $540 per week.
Adelaide, Hobart and Perth report the lowest house rents with each at $360.
Rents are expected to increase strongly in capital cities due to increased migration, low numbers of first home buyers and a shortage of rental accommodation.
