If you are going to undertake building or renovations that will cost more than $10,000, check that your prospective contractors are registered with the applicable Building Authority in your area.

You can check if your potential contractor, have been involved in any prosecutions or inquiries by contacting the relevant building authority.

A contractor must be registered if you need to perform the following:

  • Reblock
  • Restump
  • Demolish a home
  • Remove a home

For large projects consider engaging a quantity surveyor who is independent, to assess your plans and provide you with a quote.

You can source a list of Surveyors from, The Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors.

Find out how long the Contractors you are considering, have been trading and whether or not, they have been operating under the same name by contacting ASIC.

Check for any action against the builder by Consumer Affairs and prosecutions or disciplinary action against the Contractor, by the applicable Regulatory Authority in your area.

Also ask to see their most recent work and ask their recent clients about their experience with the Contractor.

Compare at least 3 written quotes and make sure you know exactly what the quotes cover before engaging someone.

Do not pay a deposit until the contractor, gives you a certificate of currency for domestic building insurance for your property.
