Buying a unit as an investment- tips from RealRenta

With the rapid growth of apartment living appearing on city landscapes all over the country, it’s important to carefully consider the attributes of a unit and what your specific requirements may be.

Here are some tips from RealRenta if you are considering purchasing a unit as your next investment:

  • Research the project developer, architect and builder to get a sense of their recent projects
  • Good design translates into better resale value ie minimal corridors, generous balconies, spacious living areas and functional layout
  • Complexes close to cafes, supermarkets, medical centres, schools, gyms and transport are good investments. Even better, properties with water and/or city views, or a close drive to the water.
  • Complexes with resort style facilities, such as pools, spas, BBQ areas, tennis courts and gyms also add value to the property
  • Look for units with quality fixtures and fittings that will last longer
  • Research the acoustics- cavity walls, party walls & corridors
  • Check acoustic membranes under hard floors ie check if the hydraulic service acoustic are wrapped
  • Consider if sound will travel in the unit and if it can be contained and if bedrooms are spaced out from each other and close to bathrooms.
  • What are the parking options like? Is there enough parking for your family and visitors? Parking can have a dramatic effect on the pricing and the general rule of thumb, is that 2 or more bedrooms, should come with two parking bays.
