Move house like a Professional- without the costs.

Packing and moving house is exhausting and time consuming, whether you are moving to the next suburb or interstate.

Whilst it is convenient to hire professionals to do everything for you, this certainly comes with a big price tag.

Depending on how much stuff you have and what services you require, the cost of a professional moving service can cost thousands.

Renting a truck and loading it yourself can range from $40 - $150 per day.

Here are some tips from RealRenta for a DIY move, to ensure that your next move is streamlined, organised and cheaper:

  • Stockpile cardboard boxes in the weeks preparing for your move. You can track down durable boxes at no cost, if you look in the right places. Visit supermarkets, bookstores and even local cafes or check websites like Craigslist, Gumtree or even Facebook.
  • When packing, don’t combine incompatible items like books and glasses for instance. Pack clothing in special wardrobe containers and hang clothes straight.
  • Label all boxes and use colour coding for each room, for example green for kitchen, blue for garage etc.
  • When loading the truck, load the largest items in first to ensure there is enough room for them.
  • Load all the boxes in first and build a wall of boxes from the back to the door and tie everything down to avoid an avalanche.
  • Borrow or purchase bungee cords, furniture sliders, moving straps, floor runners and tarps to protect the boxes whilst commuting.
