Your RealRenta Guide to Real Estate Speak

As a property investor, it is always important that you perform your due diligence on properties that you are interested in.

Online real estate listings are very sophisticated these days with plenty of photos, floor plans and videos designed to capture a large pool of potential buyers.

Real estate terminologies can sometimes be difficult to decipher, which is not always helpful.

Here at RealRenta, we have devised a list ( a bit tongue in cheek) of the more commonly used terms on online listings, so that you can differentiate the words from the reality:

  • Modern

This word can often be used for all properties built after the 1940’s post war era- yes….really.

  • Courtyard

Generally means an outdoor space of indeterminate quality or size.

  • Funky

Sometimes this word is used to describe houses with paisley wallpaper and shag pile carpet

  • Filled with Character/Quirky

This could mean anything but sometimes it could mean that the previous owner was an amateur architect and that some rooms are in the shape of a pyramid.

  • Renovator’s delight

You will probably have to take out a second mortgage

  • Classic

Probably filled with asbestos and is weatherboard or fibro.

  • Sunny

Probably get’s really hot in summer

  • Potential study or second bedroom

Probably has very large cupboards.

  • Snug/Cosy

You probably won’t be able to swing any cats in the house.
